Community rinks reopen after a summer of upgrades

Fresh boards, brighter lighting and a lobby that no longer doubles as a wind tunnel. The off-season work is done and the doors are open again.

The work started the week after the last skate of the spring and carried on, more or less without pause, until the compressors came back on. Anyone who has spent a winter in a community rink will recognise the list: boards, glass, lighting, and the perpetual battle against a lobby door that never quite closed.

What the upgrades change most is the ordinary stuff. Warmer dressing rooms mean earlier practices are an easier sell. Better lighting makes the far end of the ice look like the near end. None of it makes the highlight reel, and all of it is why the buildings stay full.

Public skating and minor programming resume on the usual schedule. The clubs that call these rinks home are already back in them, which is generally the surest sign the season has actually started.
