Queen's Gaels stay perfect with 4th quarter comeback win over the Western Mustangs
The Western Mustangs stormed back from a 24-10 deficit to take the lead but ultimately lost for the first time in 2026 after a big fourth quarter by the Queen's Gaels propelled them to a 41-30 victory.
A 38-yard touchdown pass from Jerome Rancourt to Nik Shewchuk late in the third quarter put Western in front 29-27, giving them their first lead of the game.
That momentum was short-lived thanks to veteran Queen's quarterback Alex Vreeken who engineered three scoring drives in the fourth quarter than produced 14 points and turned the momentum back toward the Gaels allowing them to earn a road win at Western and preserve their unbeaten record at 5-0.
Western is now 4-1 and will be heading to Ottawa and back twice in the next two weeks to face Carleton and then the Gee Gees before returning home on Oct. 24 for their final regular season game that will feature head coach Michael Faulds against the team he coached last year in the Laurier Golden Hawks.
Faulds pointed to fixable issues as being a key problem for the Mustangs.
"The turnovers are glaring," said Faulds after the game. "We showed a lot of fight in that second half. We didn't bow down and you know we just didn't do enough."
Rancourt finished the day 17-for 31 with two touchdowns and three interceptions.
Western's Dasani McIntosh turned in one of the most electric plays of the year when he scored the Mustangs first touchdown of the day on a kickoff return that went 98 yards.
Emmett Charles had another big day for Western with six catches for 71 yards.
Ethan Dolby gained another 96 yards on the ground and sits 12 yards shy of 500 on the season and second in the OUA in yards per rush at 8.3.
Vreeken threw for over 400n yards for the second time this year and ended the day with three touchdowns and one interception that came courtesy of Western safety Cyrus McGarrell.
